The dorje (vajra) is a ritual instrument, usually paired with a bell (drilbu / dril bu – Sanskrit ghanta) to represent method and wisdom, form and emptiness. Literally, dorje means lord stone. Do means stone. rJe means lord – but it also means: king, sovereign, and chief. It implies majesty and ‘one who takes control’ or ‘one who commands with supreme control’. The dorje is the thunderbolt, diamond, adamantine sceptre which expresses the capacity to overwhelm all dualistic neurosis with its incomparable brilliance, strength, durability, and immutability.
