The Skull Bowl

Yeshé Tsogyel appliqué 2003

Yeshé Tsogyel holds a skull bowl in her left hand. This symbolises the transformed emotions and wisdom. The white bone of the skull is the male quality of spacious-passion. The red frothing oceans of menstrual blood within the skull bowl are the female quality of passionate-space.

The intricate detail of embroidery and the quality of skill of craftsmanship is clearly shown in this picture.

Lama Nor’dzin was particularly pleased with the attention to detail. She said:
A great deal of time and care was taken in getting details such as Yeshé Tsogyel’s hands absolutely correct. Several apprentices proved themselves to be highly skilled at embroidery.
