A-shé Khandro

the shawl of the gö kar chang-lo’i dé

A-shé Khandro is swathed in the red, white and blue striped shawl of the gö kar chang-lo’i dé (gos dKar lCang lo’i sDe). In the Aro gTér tradition this shawl was highly specific and the number of stripes and their position was a teaching in itself with regard to the Khandro Pawo Nyi-da Mélong Gyüd (mKha’ ’gro dPa bo nyi zLa me long rGyud). Aro Lingma devised a wide variety of shawls which depicted aspects of different types of teachings and practice and some of these have been recreated by Ngak’chang Rinpoche and Khandro Déchen. The peaceful, joyous and wrathful shawls of the Aro tradition have been made and are kept as treasures of the tradition.
